The Slap Yes, Downton Abbey No!
Highly recommended is the eight-part production of The Slap being shown here in the UK Thursday nights on BBC Four. It's far better than the overrated, predictable and cliché ridden, glorified soap Downton Abbey II. Maybe it's so popular because it presents a long lost sense of Englishness, a reminder of a time when Brittania ruled the waves and people knew their places. Ah, the good old days!

Hi Bruce,
ReplyDeleteInteresting thing you wrote about the Remploy closures yesterday, the closures are tricky. I now work for a charity that supports people with learning disabilities into employment and I have some issues with the Remploy factories. They are very expensive in terms of the outputs (£26k a year per place) and sheltered workplaces are not good in my opinion - disabled people should and are supported (by Toucan and other similar charities) to work in general employment, engendering much great social inclusion. If the money for running the Remploy factories was still available for the benefit of disabled people then it could be used a lot more efficiently, but the fact that these options have been complete removed is not good - especially as certain areas such as South Wales have no jobs anyway. Agreed with your gist, but think that sheltered workplaces really hold people with disabilities back and ghettoise them. Alex
